As someone who’s spent the last 12 years as a PC sheet supplier—talking to architects, acoustic engineers, and small business owners about their material needs—I get that question all the time: Are PC sheets sound-insulating? The short answer is, it’s not a straight yes or no, but it’s way more nuanced (and useful) than most people think, depending on what you actually need sound insulation to do. PC Sheet

Let’s start with the basics, because so many people mix up two key terms: sound insulation and sound absorption. I hear this at least once a week when a customer calls, saying “I need a sound-insulating panel” and means they don’t want noise from outside seeping in, or vice versa. Sound insulation is about stopping airborne sound from passing through a barrier—so if a lawnmower is roaring outside, you don’t want that vibration moving through walls or windows into your space. Sound absorption, on the other hand, is about reducing echo and reverb inside a room, like cutting down the echo in a conference hall or a music studio. These are two totally different jobs, and PC sheets perform differently at each.

First, let’s break down what PC sheets are, just to make sure we’re on the same page. PC stands for polycarbonate—a thermoplastic that’s 200 times stronger than glass, lightweight, shatter-resistant, and already used everywhere from greenhouses to bus shelters to security windows. They come in single-wall, twin-wall, multi-wall, and corrugated formats, which changes pretty much every property, including sound. This is a huge part of why their sound performance varies so much: a 3mm single-wall PC sheet works nothing like a 16mm multi-wall PC sheet, and that’s a critical detail I wish more people understood.

Now, to the core question: Do PC sheets insulate sound? For single-wall PC sheets, the short answer is, not great for heavy noise. A 3mm clear single-wall PC sheet has an Sound Transmission Class (STC) rating of around 22, while a 6mm single-wall is roughly 26. For context, a typical single-pane glass window has an STC of 26–29. That means 50% or more of the noise from a busy street (60–70 decibels during the day) or a conversation (60 decibels) will pass straight through. If you’re trying to block out that noise entirely for a home office or a bedroom, single-wall PC sheets alone won’t cut it.

But here’s where twin-wall and multi-wall PC sheets change everything, and where I’ve seen them shine for real-world projects. Twin-wall PC sheets have two parallel walls separated by hollow chambers, and that air gap between the walls is a game-changer for sound insulation. A 10mm twin-wall clear PC sheet has an STC rating of 32, and a 16mm twin-wall can hit 35. For reference, an STC of 30 means noise is reduced by about 10 decibels—so that 70-decibel street traffic drops to 60, which is the level of normal background noise in a quiet office. That’s noticeable, but not enough for spaces where you need near-silence, like a recording studio or a hospital consultation room.

Wait, multi-wall PC sheets go even further. A 25mm multi-wall PC sheet (which has three or more layers of walls creating multiple air gaps) can reach an STC rating of 38–40. That means that same 70-decibel street traffic drops to 30 decibels—about the level of a whisper, or a library. That’s actually solid sound insulation for many commercial and residential applications. I recently worked with a school district that used 20mm multi-wall PC sheets for the exterior walls of their new band room to block out noise from the adjacent playground. They told us later that the band director could hold a conversation inside with the playground running at full volume, which would have been impossible with single-wall panels.

But let’s be honest—STC ratings don’t tell the whole story, because they test for mid-range noise, like speech or traffic. What about low-frequency noise, like the rumble of a highway or a HVAC unit? That’s where PC sheets get a mixed review from acoustic engineers. Low-frequency sound has longer wavelengths, so it needs more mass or damping material to block. A thick glass panel might have an STC of 35, but it still lets through a lot of that deep rumble, because glass is stiff and doesn’t absorb low-frequency vibration. PC sheets, while strong, are also flexible, and that flexibility can be a downside here. A 16mm twin-wall PC sheet might only block 5–7 decibels of low-frequency highway rumble, compared to 10 decibels from a similarly sized laminated glass panel. That’s an important caveat—if your main concern is deep, low noise, PC sheets alone aren’t the best bet, but they can be paired with other materials to boost performance.

Now, what about sound absorption? Because so many people ask about that too, especially for interior spaces. This is where PC sheets are often misunderstood. If you take a plain, smooth PC sheet, its Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)—the measure of how much sound it absorbs, on a scale of 0 (no absorption) to 1 (perfect absorption)—is around 0.05. That means it absorbs only 5% of sound, reflecting the other 95% back into the room. So if you put plain PC sheets on the walls of a small conference room, you’d end up with way more echo, not less. But there’s a simple fix here: textured, embossed, or perforated PC sheets. We make perforated PC sheets all the time for this exact reason—drilling small, uniform holes into the surface turns that smooth, reflective sheet into an absorber. A perforated PC sheet with 20% open area can have an NRC of 0.6–0.7, which is on par with many lightweight acoustic foam panels. We installed these in a startup office last year that had terrible echo in their open work space, and they told us the background noise felt 50% quieter within a month. The great thing about perforated PC sheets is that they’re still durable—unlike foam, they don’t get dusty, scratch easily, or degrade in sunlight, so they work great in open offices, retail spaces, or even gyms.

Another point that comes up with every customer: comparing PC sheets to other common sound-insulating materials, like glass, acrylic, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Let’s be real—if you’re only looking at STC ratings, laminated glass is going to have a higher STC than any PC sheet: a 10mm laminated glass has an STC of 35, and a 16mm laminated glass can hit 40, which is on par with a thick multi-wall PC sheet. But PC sheets have two huge advantages here: weight and impact resistance. A 16mm twin-wall PC sheet weighs about 0.6 kg per square foot, while a 16mm laminated glass weighs around 3.5 kg per square foot. That makes PC sheets way easier to install, especially on large windows or exterior walls where weight is a concern. And if a branch falls, or a kid hits a window with a ball, a PC sheet won’t shatter into dangerous shards—unlike glass, which is a huge safety factor for schools, playgrounds, or retail stores that see lots of foot traffic.

Acrylic is another common competitor, and its sound performance is almost identical to single-wall PC sheets—STC of around 27 for 6mm acrylic, same as PC. But acrylic yellows over time when exposed to UV light, while PC sheets have UV-stabilized coatings that last 10–15 years outdoors, so they hold their clarity and performance way longer than acrylic. PVC, on the other hand, is heavier than PC, less impact-resistant, and its sound insulation is actually slightly worse than PC—so PC is the better all-around material for most projects.

But let’s get to the real-world use cases, because that’s what matters most to my customers. When do PC sheets actually work well for sound insulation, and when should you look elsewhere?

Where PC sheets excel for sound insulation:

Residential and commercial exterior walls where you need basic noise reduction (blocking street traffic, neighborhood noise, construction noise). A 16mm twin-wall PC sheet is perfect for a home office, a small retail store, or a sunroom that’s next to a busy street.

Security or noise barriers near highways or construction sites. We’ve supplied 25mm multi-wall PC sheets to cities for temporary noise barriers along new road construction—they’re lightweight, easy to install and remove, and durable enough to withstand wind, rain, and debris.

Interior sound panels where you need absorption, not just insulation. Perforated PC sheets are a great alternative to acoustic foam for open offices, gyms, or classrooms because they’re low-maintenance and long-lasting.

Spaces where safety is a priority. If you need a sound barrier in a school, a playground, or a hospital, PC sheets’ shatter resistance makes them a much safer choice than glass or acrylic, even if their STC is slightly lower.

Where PC sheets aren’t the best choice:

Spaces where you need maximum sound insulation for low-frequency noise, like a recording studio, a home theater, or a machine room. For these, you’ll want to pair PC sheets with mass-loaded vinyl or acoustic insulation between the walls, or go with laminated glass.

High-stakes commercial spaces that require STC ratings above 40, like hospital operating rooms or broadcast studios. Even the thickest multi-wall PC sheets won’t hit that level, so you’ll need specialized acoustic panels for those.

I’ve had customers reach out to me over the years with crazy use cases that test PC sheets’ sound performance. Last year, a musician contacted me who was converting a shed at the back of his property into a home studio, and he wanted to use PC sheets for the exterior walls because he couldn’t afford glass. We suggested combining 12mm twin-wall PC sheets with 2 inches of acoustic insulation inside, and adding a layer of mass-loaded vinyl between the insulation and the PC sheet. The end result? His studio had an STC rating of 41, which is enough to block most outside noise, and he told me he could record guitar tracks without his neighbor hearing a thing. That’s the kind of custom solution I love working on—because it shows that PC sheets aren’t a one-size-fits-all material, but they can be adapted to fit almost any need.

Another common misconception I want to clear up: adding air gaps to PC sheets improves sound insulation more than just making the sheet thicker. A 10mm twin-wall PC sheet (with one air gap) has a higher STC than a 10mm single-wall PC sheet, because that air gap acts as a buffer for sound waves. That’s why multi-wall sheets with multiple air gaps are so much better for sound—each layer of air adds another barrier to stop noise from passing through.

So, to circle back to the original question: Are PC sheets sound-insulating? The honest answer is, yes—when paired with the right type of sheet and installation, they’re a cost-effective, durable option for many sound-related needs, though they do have limits. They’re not going to replace specialized acoustic panels or laminated glass for high-stakes, silent spaces, but for most residential and commercial projects, they perform well beyond what most people expect.

If you’re working on a project and wondering if PC sheets are the right material for your sound insulation needs, I’m happy to walk through your options.
